May 16, 2008 Low-Carb Menu

12:15PM
Spinach salad with eggs, cheese, bacon, sunflower seeds, dried cranberries and Ranch dressing, 2 mini-cheeseburgers with pickle and mayo, mashed cauliflower with butter

2:00PM
45-minute mowing/yardwork

8:00PM
6-ounce sirloin steak with a little A-1, mixed veggies (broccoli, squash, green beans, and red peppers) with butter, 2 fried eggs

CURRENT WEIGHT: 265.2

NOTE: Am I eating too much? That's what some have theorized is my problem. I'm open to listening to any ideas about what to do about this issue with my weight right now, but I'm not panicking. However, I must tell you this suggestion is quite baffling to me. Compared to the volume of food I used to eat at 410 pounds, I eat like a bird now. But even now I am eating substantially less food than I was in 2004 and 2005 right after my weight loss. Simply cutting back on portions and calories has not made any dent in this recent weight gain of about 30 pounds. I'm somewhat opposed to cutting my portions any more than I have because I don't feel I am eating much now. Look at today's menu. In my attempt to try to not eat as much, I ate twice today. Okay, so if I tried to naturally cut down on my portions today, would I have eaten every 3 hours to keep the hunger bug away? Probably. Instead, I got all my satiety in two meals. Six of one, half a dozen of another. I still contend this has NOTHING to do with my diet right now and I'll keep investigating all my options. THANKS for all the wonderful feedback and encouragement you've been sharing. Now add to the stress of all of this the fact that Blogger has locked me out of my "Livin' La Vida Low-Carb" blog again. AAAAACK! Calgon take me away!

I don't think you're eating too much. I eat as much as you on some days and I weigh 135. I roasted a leg of lamb this week just for snacks. :-) I don't eat so many eggs but I do eat other stuff, lots of cream, more bacon than you do, cheese sticks, pepperoni chips, salami to snack on, etc. One day this week I ate lamb fat for lunch. Just the fat. It was delicious. If I cook a package of sausages I usually eat some with breakfast and then eat the rest all throughout the day as snacks.
Since you began posting your menus I've eaten much more veg because I saw that you eat so many more servings than I ever have. So I'm actually eating better after reading your menu's.

THANKS Karen! I'm glad you are eating more vegetables...non-starchy and green leafy veggies are amazing and good for you too! I appreciate your personal story about food portions.

Hi Jimmy,

Maybe it's not so much that you are eating too much altogether as you are eating too much at one time!

There's been a "rule" or belief spoken for years that taking your calories for the day and spreading them out into at least 6 smaller meals creates more weight loss...the theory being that it keeps your digestion humming along more evenly, therefore raising your metabolism.

This same school of thought says that eating all your calories in one, two, or three meals can cause you to gain weight.

Here's another thought: Maybe you are not eating enough! Maybe your caloric needs are for more calories, since you are exercising more! I've seen that as a reason to stall, too...not taking in enough calories.

So, maybe you could take your 4 eggs, 4 sausages, and 4 tomatoes and halve them for breakfast, then have a mid-morning snack of the other half. Have lunch and half of it as a mid-afternoon snack, half of dinner later before bedtime, etc. etc.

It wouldn't hurt to try it, Jimmy.

Best wishes,
Carol

P.S. I'm having trouble with your blog letting me post today.

Jimmy,

I just want to commend you for being open-minded about any possible cause for your weight-gain.

This isn't easy to do but it's vitally important, IMO.

If you didn't make this effort, you really couldn't rule out all these possible contributing factors - like portion-size, sugar-substitutes, etc.

Also, I hope that you know that your experimentation is also a learning experience for all of us.

It's like a science experiment that we're let in on. :)

So, I hope you feel good about what you're doing and the benefits it will yield for you and others. It's perfectly in line with all that you already do on this blog/forum.

Keep up the good work and know that many, many people are keeping a good thought for you and keeping you in their/our prayers.

Be well,

Harry

Jimmy,

What about trying the intermittent fasting again? You said you lost 4.5 when you did it before. I don't know it might be the jump start you need. Good luck brother!

THANKS Carol! Actually, I have been used to eating lots of small meals throughout the day. It's part and parcel what I've been telling people to do for as long as I can remember. But that's only if you get hungry. Right now, hunger is controlled. Maybe my meals are too big, but I eat until my hunger is satisfied and then don't eat again until I get hungry again. I may try eating lots of smaller meals arbitrarily at some point.

THANK YOU Harry! Yes, I do realize people want to see what's gonna happen to me which is why I wanted to do this in the open here at my menus blog. We WILL figure this out and hopefully everyone will benefit in the process. :D

Actually, Jeff, I have considered the intermittent fast as a last resort. You know how much I loathed it the last time I went on it, but at this point I'm game for just about anything.

As I have only recently started reading your blog, I don't know the entire history but from these last few weeks I have a few thoughts. Muscle is heavier than fat...maybe it is the added muscle bulk that is making you weigh more but you are not actually "gaining" weight. Gaining muscle would be good right? Or maybe your metabolism is just slowing down. They say it happens in old age...haha. I am just over 40 and I swear it is happening to me. And what about not eating enough. I have heard that your body can go into starvation mode when you don't eat enough and start to hold onto the weight. Several times while low carbing I have done a carb load and then dropped weigh right afterwards. I don't have any idea how this works but it seems to. Anyway...I enjoy the blog...those are my thoughts.

THANKS for sharing your thoughts, Becci (and thank you for checking out my blogs). All of the things you mentioned are certainly possibilities and I've shared about them before. The added muscle weight probably accounts for about 10-15 pounds of my 30-pound gain, but I'm at a loss for the rest of it.

I eat less food now than I did when I was losing weight, but that's my new body adjusting to less caloric needs than before. During my weight loss in 2004, I ate every few hours to train myself to eat rather than save up my calories for one big meal. I did that for most of the first two years and then decided to start listening to my body's natural hunger signals. That's what I've been doing for the past couple of years with no problems to speak of.

It has been suggested I eat a high-carb meal to "shock" my system back into place. Just the thought of doing that grosses me out. Sure I did it during my weight loss on my planned splurges, but I don't need that anymore since I don't have cravings for high-carb foods. I'm waiting to see what my doctor suggests next before doing something like that.

But I am thinking of going back to something I hated, but might just work. Stay tuned!
