NOTE: Day 1 of FitCamp was one of the most challenging experiences of my life today. You can see what me and 7 brave women went through both in our morning session with Jacob Carringer followed by Isabeau Miller training us in the afternoon in these FitCamp videos I posted on YouTube today. They wanted me to eat 2500 calories to keep up with all this exercise while eating no more than every four hours--something I have been accustomed to in the past. The good thing is they have let me continue eating low-carb through this experience.

However, you'll notice another Atkins bar crept into my menus today and there's a reason for that. I started getting dizzy in the morning workout session and Jacob recommended I eat a grapefruit snack. When I asked if strawberries worked just as well, he said they're good, too. So I need to go to the store and buy some strawberries to eat between workouts the rest of the time I'm here at FitCamp.

You'll notice I listed the calorie counts for all the foods I'm eating so I can keep up with how many calories I'm taking in. Believe it or not, I had a challenge trying to get my calories up high enough to that 2500 level and maybe those extra snacks between the workouts will help me get the calories elevated. In fact, I was so full from that big meal I made for supper to make up my calories that I couldn't finish it in one sitting...I had to save the rest of it for three hours later. And I wasn't hungry then either. But there's a method to the madness right now that they're putting us through and I look forward to weight loss being produced from this. :)

Today I got in over 2250 calories and I'll try to hit closer to my goal on Tuesday.

Sounds like great fun! Keep it up.

I'm not suggesting that you do this, but it would have been interesting to see what would have happened had you adopted the (higher carb) diet recommended by the camp, even just for 2 weeks.

I am generally low carb, but have recently started adding more carbs before and after training sessions. Exercise does helpful things to your insulin sensitivity.

I wasn't opposed to that, Chris, but Isabeau didn't want to mess with what has been my diet for the past 4+ years. I am considering adding a few extra carbs in the form of strawberries or something like that for between the workouts. Otherwise, I'm staying pretty low-carb.

"DO WHAT THE PEOPLE SAY DO!"

Jimmy, you've never worked out this hard, and I think you need to follow the recommended diet. You might want to reduce the carbs SOME, but don't put yourself in a bad place. You might end up on the verge of passing out before you know it. (Hopefully not, but I'm just saying to be careful.)

I didn't say to pig out on carbs, however. How many carbs do they want you to eat? I'm pretty sure it's not THAT many.

Chris, you come across as such a strict hard butt here most of the time, I can't believe you actually eat a few carbs at workout time. You mean, carbs aren't so evil you can see the need for limited amts of carbs when it's appropriate. Shocking! [And yes, I'm joking. :-)]

Jacob the trainer recommended today I add a slice of whole wheat bread at breakfast and lunch to my menu during these workouts. I'm game for it to eliminate the dizziness. We'll see.

Been following your blog for a while and appreciate your work and insights, Jimmy!

I, too, occasionally have some dizzyness during workouts on my bascially low-carb lifestyle (<30g/day), and I've noticed that a spoonful of natural peanut butter helps (even if I have to do it mid-workout, which includes 45m of cardio and some weight-training after). Or sometimes I'll have a soy-protein drink (which contains some low-carb fruit), which will give me an energy boost. I know it seems counter-intuitive to eat DURING a workout, but I don't do it regularly -- only when I feel exhausted or dizzy, which is only occasionally. It's my body crying out for SOMEthing, so I feed it, and I've gotten back on track quickly. I also drink at least 32 oz of water during each workout.

I really can't survive without some fruits and veggies, which include strawberries (and other assorted berries on occasion), and apples. I try to limit my fruit to once a day. I also enjoy broccoli and green beans, as well as spinach and salad greens. But I'm off all processed foods except for the occasional condiment, and I wonder about your lunch of deli meat and American cheese slices.

I'm a recovering carb addict -- if I have ONE slice of bread, I'd be back on the carb wagon full-on. This has happened even when I've told myself that a little or once in a while of the healthiest kinds is okay. It's a problem for me that's greater than mere "willpower" -- it really is that sugar switch going off in my head, creating all kinds of chaos, and I've paid dearly for it. So, tread lightly, Jimmy! A slice of bread to a non-low-carber doesn't seem like a big deal, but there are other ways to get quick carbs that don't include foods you've avoided for years.

Best of luck!

THANKS Crimea! I'm gonna give it a test drive and see how I do. One slice of this bread is 20g net carbs, so I'm not happy about it. But it will be to see if there is a difference made with my dizziness.

Or you could just eat 5 teaspoons of sugar.... that is the equivalent, right?

Kind of puts it in perspective, eh?

I'm surprised Jacob didn't have you eat a lot more at breakfast. You are doing tremendous amounts of cardio and circuit training!

Instead of toast have some steel-cut oatmeal such as Old Wessex 5-Grain. Oatmeal will keep you satisfied longer. As Mom always told me, oatmeal sticks to your ribs!

Possibly a good quality protein drink is in order, too.

I would definitely pick their brains regarding sports nutrition. I wonder if they said to cut down on the cheese, yet? LOL

Jimmy Moore said...

THANKS Lora. No, the main complaints are the lack of fruits and veggies (something I'm gonna try to add in although I've not been very hungry) and the addition of a slice of whole grain bread before each workout to help with the dizziness. I asked what else I could eat and he suggest whole grain pasta or whole grain rice. I'll see how the slice of bread goes...worst case scenario is it does NOTHING for my dizziness and I skip it. But I don't like that spinning/blackout feeling when training. The oatmeal is a good idea, but hunger is NOT a problem. I'm struggling to get my calories up high enough because I just don't feel like eating.

You're preaching to the choir on that one, sanddog. I agree it's just sugar, but as I'm going through this experience I need to lean on the expertise of those who are leading me. Again, it's only temporary while I'm here at FitCamp.

You can do it low or very low carb. And if you pass out you pass out. You will get up and get back to it. I have been there. You body gets used to it.

I say NEVER start a diet program that you don't plan on maintaining for the rest of you life.

Jimmy Moore said...

Pete, I may keep doing it if the dizziness goes away. This is an experiment to see what works for me.

Trader Joes makes sprouted whole wheat bread that is 4 net carbs per slice. Good luck!

Jimmy Moore said...

Low-carb bread sorta defeats the purpose of eating it, but I appreciate you thinking. :)
