NOTE: I hate it when I wake up late for a scheduled appointment after staying up a little later the night before. That's what happened this morning. My spin class at my gym started at 9:30AM followed by a weight lifting workout with my personal trainer at 10:30AM--but I woke up at 9:15AM! EEEEEK! So, I didn't have time to eat anything before I left...stupid, I know, but what do you do? :)
But the good news is I'm not getting dizzy during my workouts like I used to. That was the strangest thing earlier this year when the symptoms of hypoglycemia were happening to me, but now they've seemed to subside and I make it just fine through my various exercise activities. And my knee that I talked about yesterday did perfectly okay during spin class with all the jumps and sprints...no trouble at all. YEAH!
I struggled getting my calories up to where they needed to be today partly because I got behind by not eating breakfast. Grrrr! But I'll work on that so I can get back to a balanced three-meals-a-day routine again. Yes, I know I had a LOT of sweet today and that was by design. I just wanted to irk everyone who thinks I shouldn't be eating stuff like that. Hee hee! Still no diet sodas for me today...MORE progress! You gotta love it!

How mature of you! People are commenting here because they care - we are trying hard to be encouraging and understanding. If you want to eat 3 cakes and some cereal, fine it is your body. But justifying it to irk folks?
I think I'll go for a 30 day challenge of not commenting on your menus ;-)
Hope you keep losing.
...and well done on the soda front
I gotta have a little fun, Chris! :)
By the way, when did I have "some cereal" in my menu today? I haven't had cereal in nearly five years. Perhaps it would be a good idea to click on the links when I provide them so you know what I ate rather than assuming they are something else. The Sweet Nut'ns (which I assume you are calling "cereal") is nothing more than nuts and erythritol.

Sorry - not cereal but nuts adulterated with a variety of artifical sweeteners. I was confused because you had some "granola" from this same company a few days ago.
I'm signing off - all the best with your weight loss efforts, but I'm not going to be commenting any more.
Chris
THANKS Chris! Sorry you got upset. I appreciate all your comments over the past year. :)
Q.E.D.? I have no idea what that means, but weight fluctuates each day. I'm not concerned.
It means basically, "my point is proven."
THANKS Justin! But I'm not sure what "point" has been "proven" yet. A one-day weight fluctuation does not tell the bigger picture. The trend is still going down. :)
OK.

Yep, up 2.4lbs, so Jimmy how's that workin for ya? (Hee hee...)
Seriously people?! Since when is anyone perfect except for our creator? Leave Jimmy alone! Jimmy is doing a wonderful job. He is following a low carb way of life, not an all natural way of life. None of you EVER have something sweet? Ever? Even if he is eating something sweet everyday, at least it's not ice cream or pie or full calorie pop. Get over yourselves, because I hate to break it to you, YOU are not perfect yourself. YOU are the ones who decided to appoint Jimmy as your guide to low carb living. He did not ask for that, he simply allows us to take a peek into his life as a low carber. He is human. You all forget his honesty and the 180+ POUNDS HE LOST IN 2004, and kept off for the most part. Ugh!

RE: Chris's comment, "Sorry - not cereal but nuts adulterated with a variety of artifical sweeteners. I was confused because you had some "granola" from this same company a few days ago" and others who keep harping on bad "chemicals" in the Flax Z Snax products and diet sodas, etc.--
You are all aware that all food breaks down into "chemicals"? I checked the ingredient lists for the so-called "crap" that Jimmy's been eating. Erythritol is a sugar alcohol, considered to be natural. Thickeners, such as guar gum, are also natural. As for Splenda, the chlorine atoms absolutely do not and cannot break free in the body. Of course, those who thrive on the hysteria of conspiracy theories will never believe that sucralose is safe, but for the intellectually curious, try reading through http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sucralose. Yes, I am fully aware of the claims that "artificial" sweeteners give some folks problems. I believe them, but everybody cannot tolerate every food substance, natural or not. My grandmother couldn't eat an oyster without becoming seriously ill. I can't eat bananas. A friend of mine cannot tolerate shellfish. Does these instances warrant classifying these foods as poisons? Jimmy's problems with his weight this year could be as simple as overdoing it, calorie-wise, with perhaps the fabulous low-carb cheesecake desserts. It's entirely possible that he felt super-hungry after he began his weight-lifting program. Maybe some of the products had some hidden carbs. Or maybe his cortisol levels shot up temporarily because of the extra stress in his life. I find it extremely simplistic, though, to conclude that because he ate something sweet (and NOT made with sugar) he gained 20+ lbs.
Didirina, when the artificial sweets were cut from Jimmy's diet the weight started falling so I think it may have played a big part in the weight gain over time.
Jen, we know Jimmy lost that incredible amount of weight in 2004 but we are talking about now. Jimmy's body seems to require more stricter adherance to a low-carb diet and its proving to be beneficial to cut out the frankenfoods.
By making suggestions or comments I don't think anyone is claiming to be perfect.
I honestly don't know who I find more annoying at this point: the naysayers, or the coddlers. Seriously, guys, this is getting ridiculous.
Jimmy, there's one thing that is bothering me, though. Lately, you seem to be having more and more high-carb fake foods, such as bread with refined flour and sugary desserts. Not all the time, but enough of the time for me to ask: were these planned splurges, or impulsive ones? I know you were put through some rough stuff lately, but that just means you need to keep your strength up all the more, and ya ain't gonna be doin' that with fake foods! =P
I'm glad you were able to learn so much during your challenge. Don't worry about bowing out early; it's not like this was the Olympics or anything. There's always the next challenge. Keep it up!
"... when the artificial sweets were cut from Jimmy's diet the weight started falling so I think it may have played a big part in the weight gain over time."
This is what I was arguing against previously. We don't really know that cutting the artificial sweets was the trigger for Jimmy's recent weight loss. Correlation is not causation. He also began tracking his caloric intake, perhaps a bit more closely, and has been taking Metformin. It may have been one particular product that had hidden carbs. He was also eating more meat and less processed cheese. His renewed success might not have had anything at all to do with not drinking diet sodas. There are too many variables here to claim that cutting out the "artificial" sweeteners did the trick.
THANKS TigerEyes! Regarding your question about the foods I've been eating, no I didn't count them as a planned splurge because I wasn't splurging. The foods I ate were a part of my regular diet. When did I have bread and sugary desserts? Was it last week when I was in Hilton Head? Let me know the specifics of what you are referring to and I'd be happy to address it. :)
Didirina said, "There are too many variables here to claim that cutting out the "artificial" sweeteners did the trick."
Actually, when Jimmy started his challenge, there were lots of changes: no "sweet," but also clean eating, counting calories, eating only three times a day and taking Metformin.
During the past few days Jimmy has been drinking less than one diet soda per day, has been counting calories, has been eating three times a day and has been taking Metformin. Yet his weight has started to creep back up. That leaves one suspect: fake low-carb foods.
You're right--correlation does not prove causation. But if Jimmy decides to go back to eating clean and the weight starts dropping again, we will have a clue as to at least one source of his weight gain problems during the past year.
Jimmy,
I'm not going to nit pick everything you place in your mouth. You're a big boy!
My goodness! I'd be very skeptical if every day for you was a perfect low-carb day.
Sorry about your shin!
Take care!
Lora
Stargazey, you're one SHARP lady! :-)
I have to admit I was completely incredulous about sweet-tasting foods being a possible barrier to weight loss, but I'm now wondering if you have a point. It will be interesting to see if Jimmy is at a temporary plateau, after having lost so swiftly for the past month, or if this really proves to be a permanent stall.
I'm still trying to wrap my head around all of this. I mean, Jimmy's calories are so low for a man of his size, he should be losing rather easily. Even being up against an insulin problem, you'd think Jimmy would lose between calorie restriction and Metformin alone, because Metformin addresses both of the specific issues Jimmy is grappling with -- excessive gluconeogenesis and insulin resistance.
You had a small slice of carrot cake on Oct. 17, half of a vanilla cheesecake milkshake on Oct. 20, and bread on Nov. 11, 13, and 14. Like I said: not all the time, but enough of the time for me to get curious. I just wondered if it was planned or self-medication, and I guess I just wanted to know if you're doing OK. =)
Yes, those were all by design. Sometimes I'll have something like that just to see how it tastes now. Additionally, I like to gauge how my body will react to eating something like that. It's only an occasional thing. But thanks for your concern. :)
I'm glad to hear it. That's what's most important, after all!
Whoops, I missed the small piece of chocolate cake on Oct. 8. That one didn't seem to have any emotional ties to it though, unless you count "chocolate lust"! =P
