NOTE: By popular request, I decided to add the carb counts to my menus starting today. As I've explained several times in the comments section to questions from people about why I don't list carb totals, counting carbs has just become second nature to me now. I've been livin' la vida low-carb for five years and methodically counting every little carb is arduous and unnecessary. The freedom from all the dieting rules is one of the things that makes this way of eating so amazing.
But I also realize there are a lot of people reading my menus who aren't as familiar with the healthy low-carb lifestyle as many long-time low-carbers are and listing my carb counts may be helpful to them. That's why I started listing my calories a few months back, too, so people can see how many I'm consuming on a daily basis. What you'll find is I don't need to restrict them artificially to produce weight loss. Keeping carbs reduced is priority #1 and it's what I've done since 2004.
Regarding my addition of Diet Dr. Pepper and other "sweet" items to my diet, you'll see I've added back a small amount of these things just to see how I do. If the weight does not continue to fall, then I know to back off on them. Otherwise, it's good to experiment and see what my body tolerates. This is a journey every individual must take for themselves and choose what goes inside of their bodies. If you choose to never consume any low-carb, sugar-free, or even "sweet" items, then that's good for you. However, if consumed moderately, I don't see anything wrong with these things as long as you know your own personal limitations with them. And that's all I have to say about that. :)

Thanks for including the carb counts, Jimmy!
For those unfamiliar with the low-carb lifestyle, it may be a surprise to learn that when high-calorie food is also low-carb, it is a perfectly fine choice for weight loss!
Regarding adding back some sweet stuff, it is up to you. But if it ain't broke why try to fix it? What you were doing was working.
I'm not saying never have a sweet treat, just that maybe you could do what you originally said and have them occasionally not daily.
Hi Jimmy,
I think it's great that you've started noting the carb counts for each of the foods. Even for long time low carbers I think it might be helpful - maybe to confirm they are counting correctly or to show any problems they may have. Or vice versa.
If you are fine with diet soft drinks, then I don't see any problem with them either.
Have a great day!
Erika
Chris, I haven't had any of my chocolate bars since October, so I've cut WAY down on my intake. Sure, the diet sodas are there, but again it's a LOT less than before (dropped to 1 or 2 per day). Like I said, I'm experimenting to see if eating LESS "sweet" will produce the same or similar results as going without it. THANKS for sharing your comments.
THANKS for the suggestion about adding the carbs, Stargazey!
Jimmy, I appreciate you posting your carb count on your menus. It makes your menu blog complete.
With regard to diet sodas and weight gain, I am a diabetic and notice a blood sugar drop after drinking a diet soda -- about 10 points sometimes. In my experience, it seems that the liver will shortly thereafter, raise my blood sugar back up. This additional sugar is the source of the additional calories that are metabolized into fat, in my opinion. This is just speculation, but as are many things in the business of diet and nutrition, I learn through trial and error.
Hi Jimmy,
I noticed you ate Jimmy Dean's pork sausage patties. I recently bought the pork roll and noticed it contained HFCS. Do the pork sausage patties contain it as well?
They like to sneak in some HFCS in sausage, so you have to read the labels carefully. The ones I bought are frozen and pre-cooked so I can just heat and eat. There is some sugar in them, but it's minuscule.
Jimmy, here's a thought: Dr. Bernstein believes that in type 1 diabetics, each carb will cause about a 5 point rise in his blood sugar level. Back when you were testing your blood sugar, did you ever test the effects of a single diet soda? If so, how much did it drop your blood sugar? If it dropped it about 10 points, as it seems to do for me, then this would be an effect similar to that which 2 carbs would have on one's insulin response system. Ten diet sodas a day would therefore have the effect of 20 extra carbs per day in one's diet. So, perhaps you could incorporate diet sodas into your diet, and consider them the equivalent of 2 carbs per soda, for your daily carb count.
Interesting SnowDog! WOW, never thought about that before. Makes total sense.
Hi Jimmy,
Posting the carb counts was a very good idea. Now, I have another suggestion that would actually be easier for you and more logical for the readers. Why not post you weight in chronological order with your other entries? For example on January 7th, something like:
08:00AM Weight 236.6
10:00AM 4 Eggs 320 Calories/4 gr carbs etc.
THANKS Coyote! I weigh myself every morning and post it at the end of the previous day's menus. I appreciate the suggestion but I'm gonna keep that format the same since I've done it for so long this way. Consistency and you get the same results.
Hey, I was wondering, do you still do planned splurges?
I was reading around online today, and saw some articles about how planned splurges on low carb diets really help keep fat loss going.
You've probably posted about this before, but maybe a combo of sweet-free days plus regular low carb days plus planned splurges might work well.
I haven't done it in a while, Tara, because I don't need it anymore. But I'm certainly an advocate of people using a "planned splurge" strategy when they first start livin' la vida low-carb.
Jimmy,
My husband and I are beginning our seond journey with low-carbing. I want to be sure we are doing this correctly and from some of the things I have been reading on your website, I don't think I totally understand how this works. I really don't understand the coconut oil and how it is a benefit on low-carb. Where can I get the best information so we don't do the wrong things.
Thanks,
Low-carbing in MS.
You can cook your meats with the coconut oil or add it to a hot beverage like I do. Make sure the coconut oil you choose is extra virgin and unrefined. Click here for more information on why coconut oil is great for weight loss and health.
