NOTE: Weight stalls and even gains can happen to anyone at anytime. I've dealt with them off and on ever since losing 180 pounds in 2004 and they're no fun at all to deal with. While not every issue like this is easy to work through, there are some common culprit areas that may be preventing you from losing weight that Christine and I highlighted in this YouTube video:

When I went to play volleyball tonight, my stomach was hurting a little. The sour cream I used in that stroganoff meal I made may have been the culprit, but whatever it was I just didn't feel well at all playing. I hate that because I play all out when I'm on the volleyball court and anything less than my best is not even worth doing. When I jumped to block shots, I seemed to be off slightly in my timing and one of the balls hit me hard in the midsection. And only half of my serves made it over the net tonight, so I was DEFINITELY not feeling well. I ended up leaving early and came home to relax before bedtime. I should feel better by tomorrow night when we play volleyball at my church. My competitive juices should be flowing!

Jimmy, I think that at the very beginning of that list for not losing weight you should have added one: you are not losing weight because... you don't have any weight to lose!!!

A lot of people have very unrealistic expectations. Women especially would like to turn the clock and go back to what they weighed as teenagers.

Life happens, body composition change, which is why ideal weight is now depicted as within a range, and not everyone will naturally be on the loweest end.

That's an EXCELLENT point, Sylvie! Certainly people who don't need to lose weight will have no reason to see weight loss happen. Thank you for the reminder!

So, I guess that all of us who are at the low end of obese don't have any weight to lose because our body composition has changed and you know life happens livin la vida low-carb! What an EXCELLENT point!! Are you kidding me???

Feel free to share your counterpoint, Jade. We're all ears. :)

OOPS, reading that again it seems that I may have read it wrong the first time. I thought Sylvie was saying that you (Jimmy) didn't have any weight to lose. Sylvie probably meant that some folks who aren't losing may already be at their lowest even though they may have been smaller at some point in time. My bad.

I have to admit that I am wondering though, Jimmy, what part of Atkins you are currently on? You say to choose your plan and follow it exactly. Are you on OWL? You say that you are trying to lose - at least I thought you did - but maybe I read that wrong, too. LOL

I've been in the maintenance phase of Atkins for the past three years, Jade, and this way of eating has become a permanent and healthy lifestyle change for me. There are times I move back into OWL to manage my weight when it starts to creep, but most of my meals are well within what Dr. Atkins wrote about in his books.

So if you are in a maintaining mode right now does that mean that you are happy where you are? If not, do you go back to induction or just slightly cut back? At what point of weight regain do you get serious about losing again? Also, it seems that some (I'm thinking Dana Carpenter and Laura Dolson, judging from photos I've seen on your site)are not able to maintain. I have all of Dana's cookbooks but when I see the photos of her I don't have a lot of confidence that eating that way is going to get me where I want to go weight wise (and it is not to where I was as a teenager). jade

I'm actually THINNER now than I was as a teenager. :D

My strategy has been to back down to OWL to bring the weight down, but perhaps a more aggressive Induction plan is needed to bring it down. I'm not all that unhappy with where I am right now regarding my health. It has never been better with all the key cardiovascular risk factors in EXCELLENT condition. I suppose if those were out of whack, I'd have more of a sense of urgency about losing the weight.

Into the mix I go:
I am only 5'2" and sit all day, for 60 hours a week in a quiet room. I am almost 50. I don't think I NEED as many calories as an active young dude who is 6 feet tall. 2000 for some, 1800 for some, 1200 for others.

I KNOW it's NOT about calories, but somewhere in cyber space, or real life, they MUST be considered. Portion size is not so much a fad, as it is common sense. Atkins said the idea is not to use LC as an excuse to gorge yourself!

I agree with your points, anne h, especially for women who just don't need as much food as men do (generally). As for your comment over on pooti's blog (WOW - I never knew! I didn't see it coming- thanks!", I sincerely hope you don't really believe the cynical tripe that's posted over there.

Hi Jimmy,
The stroganoff looks delicious. I've noticed that for this week, there are no vegetables. Do you add/remove them, or just don't like them?

Also, with the people whom you've interviewed, have they addressed this issue of "stalling"? I am curious if there are any hypothesises (hypothesi) (don't know how to make it plural, too lazy to look it up).

Jimmy Moore said...

THANKS Mark! Sometimes I'll back off on vegetables just to see if it will have an impact on my weight. So it was a conscious effort this particular week.

As for experts talking about stalls, I've had a few on. Dr. Mike Eades said that cheese and nuts can stall some people because they're easy to overeat. And other guests have discussed various ways stalls can happen. Perhaps an entire podcast on this is in order.
