NOTE: Another FANTASTIC day of blood sugar control today with my readings all within 16 points. But I'd love to know why some mornings when I check my blood sugar it is a bit higher in the 80s or 90s and then other mornings it was like today in the upper 60s/lower 70s. Of course, I'm enchanted by all of this information and will probably seek to extrapolate even more data soon like what is happening 30 minutes after a meal and one hour after eating. Stay tuned!

There are many things that might affect your blood sugar in the morning. For one, if you have a very vivid dream that would lower your blood sugar. Its simply physiology, Jimster. Brain uses 25 percent of all glucose supply for its work and since some dreams last longer than ohters it could affect your reading from 85 say to 65. I will keep this PG13 but any romantic engagement could definitely affect your blood readings. There are lots of other variable that might do it, but the most important thing is that your blood sugar readings are great although 60's might be a bit on the lower side but if you dont feel it it is great reading. Plus it goes up right after your meal so its all good!
Hi Jimmy. I know peoples eating habits change about - one week they live off beef, the next week chicken. I would be interested in seeing you BG readings after different types of foods that you eat. Surely that would be a better test/use of the BG monitor?
I am particularly interested in some of you low carb cheesecake and things like:
(from june 3rd)
8:30PM
2 slices Julian Bakery Smart Carb bread with butter, local farm eggs, cinnamon, heavy cream, Truvia, sugar-free maple praline syrup
Vanilla Carbsmart ice cream, no sugar added peach preserves, whipped cream
Diet Coke with Splenda
Thanks!
Some things I learned about blood sugar testing from my stint with gestational diabetes:
Meters make a huge difference, some are more accurate than others. Also, test strips are quite sensitive, if they have expired, for example, you can get inaccurate readings.
Even within one meter the readings can vary for no apparent reason. It was not unheard of for me to do a test, wait 5 minutes, repeat and see a 10 point difference. (That will throw you for a loop).
It can be crazy. And when the above would happen, I would usually take 2 or 3 more (insurance was generous with strips, I was very lucky) and average the results.
Also, readings vary between fingers. I almost always got lower readings from the ring fingers than the index fingers.
Then there is something called "interstitial fluid" which can seep out when you prick your finger, and give an inaccurate reading. It is commonly advised to discard the first drop of blood after a finger prick, and go for the second one to avoid the interstitial fluid. (Yeah right, my fingers were lucky to give one drop of blood.)
It is crazy, and I was so glad for low carb, where I could keep my numbers low, not take meds and not really worry about the readings (ie trying to dose meds off of them or something).
Also, have you thought about eating the same meal (like the 4 eggs with cheese) and looking at the difference between drinking Diet Coke v. another drink? Maybe water for a baseline too.
I love your eggs and bacon. I, too was enchanted by the numbers. Still am. And Diet Rite - no caffeine?
Thanks Anne! Yep, Diet Rite is caffeine-free.
Thanks for your insights, Ms. X. I'll probably try a lot of things in the coming weeks testing my BS.
It's coming Amber. ;)
Jimmy,
On your recommendation, I purchased the Naturally More PB. I can't stay out of the jar! Man, that stuff is awesome. Thanks for the rec!
I haven't noticed it lately in your menus. Do you still eat it? I can see why you might not want to keep it around, as the jar is calling my name as I type :)
Glad you live the Naturally More PB Robert. I have it in cycles so I'll add it in when I feel the urge...or when it's on sale next. :D
Just wanted to say thanks for experimenting with your blood sugar and letting us all know about it - this is very interesting!
Also, still love the menus blog as always and am forever directing people to your youtube channel for help with a low carb diet :)
"Glad you live the Naturally More PB Robert." - you live peanut butter?? lol.... been watching too much advertising lately me thinks heheheh
Or lack of sleep, Erika! :D
THANKS for your support, Tara! I means a lot to me this week especially since I've been having a rough one. :)
Hi, Jimmy, new here, reading some posts in a backward fashion so pardon my question/comment if you already explained. Your BG's are all normal. They will always fluctuate within normal range if you have no metabolic issue. Your fingers must be getting sore! What are you trying to learn?
Lots of good information on your sites. I've been listening to your podcasts on my commute. Lots of informative people you've interviewed. Oh, and a few kooks too!:) Anyhow thanks for sharing.
Peace and Good Health,
Debbie
Welcome to the fray, Debbie. And thanks for your kind comments. Yes, my blood sugar levels are "normal," but what is not normal is how it tends to DROP after meals. Testing helps to see if there is a pattern that is developing and a few people are charting the changes to see if anything comes up. THANK YOU again for sharing and keep reading. :)
