NOTE: I received a letter from the United States Postal Service today (this can NEVER be good!) that informed me one of my packages that contained my new book 21 Life Lessons From Livin' La Vida Low-Carb in it had been lost in the mail. Apparently the book was separated from the envelope in transit and the letter asked for a description of the contents so they can return it back to me. ARGH! I have mailed well over 100 autographed copies of my new book to people all over the United States and around the world the past couple of months and that's the first time that has happened. I filled out the form and hope they find it in one piece. Or at the very least, someone who needs to see the message of livin' la vida low-carb will check it out!

I continued my quest to get my weight back down again today by imploring strategies that have worked for me in the short term over the past couple of years. One of those was when I did Drs. Mike and Mary Dan Eades' The 6-Week Cure when you consume three protein shakes and one sensible low-carb meal daily for two weeks. I did so well on that a few months back that I decided to give it another go. So far, so good! And cutting down on my total fluid intake is working well for me too. Today, in addition to my protein shakes, I had just two glasses of water again. This is significantly less than the amount of water/diet soda I was previously drinking.

Oh yeah, the diet soda. It's not in my menus right now because I'm not drinking it. I've tried long and hard to give it up or at least cut way back and for the past couple of days I really haven't wanted one. This is odd because anyone who knows me personally realizes I am a heavy drinker (of fluids, not alcohol!) and cutting back as much as I have is a minor miracle. But I'm doing it and I don't miss it at all. My trips to the bathroom are much lower and I feel fine with little thirst. If I get thirsty, then I take a sip (rather than a gulp) of water. All's well!

I appreciate all the well wishes and advice that people have offered up for me over the past few days. I'm doing what's right for me and will triumph over this with my head held high. The first 20 pounds isn't my biggest concern...it's that stubborn 30 pounds that came on in 2008 that refused to let go that I'd like to see disappear. I'm working my plan and will stick with this as long as it takes to get my weight back down. In the meantime, I'm thankful for my incredible health and feeling fantastic! Never stop focusing on the good things that are happening with your health while you are shedding the pounds! YOU CAN DO IT TOO!

Hi, Jimmy,

You are doing your body a big favor by shucking the diet soda!

Keep it up!

Just wanted to wish you the best of luck in this new eating pattern, and elimination of diet soda. It's still very present in my life, so I can imagine the frustration or headaches coming on. I also wanted to wish you.
"Happy New Year, Jimmy!"

Jimmy, glad you're stopping with the Diet Coke. I guarantee you'll feel a lot better without it. I'd also advise you to look at your finances and see just how much money you're saving by not drinking the stuff. I used to be in the same boat as you, maybe even worse. I'd have a good 6 Diet Sodas a day or so. Not only was this wreaking havoc on my body with it's caffeine and chemicals, but it was killing my wallet as well. Your best results were going "Sweet-Free", and I think this is a great step in moving into that "Sweet Free" zone again. I think you'll do very well as long as you keep that Diet Coke far away.

James, I'm not completely opposed to doing the "sweet-free" thing again (for those of you who missed this, I cut out anything with a sweet taste on the tongue as an experiment in late 2008). But I don't think it is the "sweet" that is necessarily the trigger. What I'm doing now is certainly putting me one step closer to easing into that again and that's a good thing. Cutting down on my overall fluid intake has been a HUGE shift for me that I think will reap big dividends to my weight and health. THANKS!

Actually, Kent, no headaches for me from removing the diet soda because I have been drinking the decaffeinated ones for the most part. I am somewhat losing my desire for them which is a blessing because like you I've been holding on desperately to them since they are "zero calories." But zero doesn't mean they don't have any impact on me, so I'm giving it a whirl. HAPPY NEW YEAR TO YOU TOO BUDDY!
