NOTE: I've now gone three full days without a diet soda and I honestly don't miss them at all right now. I think part of the credit for killing my craving for them is the significant reduction in my total fluid intake. Since I've learned to make do with a couple of glasses of water a day the past few days (I had just two again today) along with the fluids in my protein shakes, I have no desire at all to put them inside of my body. Now, for those of you who have been following my writings for a while, you know what a monumental thing this is since I have been a diet soda drinker and a half ever since my 180-pound weight loss experience in 2004 where I replaced my sugary sodas with diet sodas.
I have often questioned why diet soda is bad for me and even asked once asked a question in a blog post that seemed obvious to me at the time: which is healthier, diet soda or sugary soda? But I've tried to give up my diet sodas beginning with my 2007 New Year's resolution to chunk 'em from my diet, but I didn't make it very far into February that year before I couldn't stand it anymore. And my thinking about drinking them was then reinforced by my readers many of whom said diet soda was harmless and I believed it too. It's three years later now and I'm wondering what is right for me and if this has any connection to my slight weight gain. Perhaps. Maybe not.
What I do know is I don't want any diet sodas right now and actually they seem pretty disgusting to think about. One bad habit I have had with drinking is gulping my beverages. I could down a whole glass of diet soda pretty quickly and then get another...and another...and another. Some may think that's an addiction and maybe on some level it has been. But I am apt to think it was more of what Dr. Su noted to me in my conversation with him last week a habit of drinking too many fluids and the results so far are bearing that out. It never occurred to me that drinking too much fluid would be leading to weight gain when all of them are calorie-free. I'll continue to track my progress on this, but it seems I'm on to something that will be much better for me over the long-term than a measly little weight gain the past couple of years.
THANKS for your feedback everyone! Excellent comments and advice.

How much water do you put in your cocktail, I mean protein shakes? Do you put any extra sweetener in them such as splenda or stevia or you think they are sweet enough? Are you still putting two scoops in each shake and how is your hunger?
THANKS Vadim! I fill up the bottom of the glass with about a 1/2 cup of water and other than the first day when I put some Truvia in the shakes I haven't used any extra sweeteners than what is already in the protein powder mix. Yes, I'm using two scoops per shake and along with the MCT oil and cream my hunger is pretty much nonexistent for several hours after consuming them. If I feel hunger, then I'll have another shake or consume a low-carb meal. So far it's been a great experience and I'm surprised. I thought I'd be clamoring for food and diet soda by now.
Keep it going. I had wonderful results on it too but for some unexplained reasons I started having IBS like symptoms and it was scary to the point where my heart would be racing so fast I had to be hospitalized once. It was probably due to anixety but stomack issues were real. I felt better after going to the bathroom each time but had to stop eventually. I too gained weight and thinking to going back on shakes again. But this time I may try to add more oil instead of cream and a bit more vegetables in one meal to see if that helps. Plus I might ditch the fruits I used to put in those shakes. i read somewhere that fruits should never be eaten with food since it messes up digestion. I dont know. But I will be following your footsteps soon and pray that this time its all good.
Hello Jimmy!
I've been following your menus for about a year now, and from my perspective, it's not necessarily the diet sodas which are tripping you up, but rather the sugar and wheat which you seem to consume fairly regularly, mainly in the form of low carb treats.
I can't handle them either. Just a few grams of them will put weight on me, forcing me to go back to meat and water only, until the weight comes off. It's not the salads and the green vegetables; it's the sugar, sugar alcohols, and grain based products, even if they are called 'low carb'.
I agree, SnowDog, which is why I've ditched them in my diet as well. :)
I'm skipping the fruit for now...it will hurt more than help with trying to control the insulin which packed on the pounds.
Off topic, HAPPY NEW YEAR Jimmy and Christine!! Wishing you all the best in 2010!
THANKS Didirina! Nothing is off-topic here. :D
HAPPY NEW YEAR to you and all of my readers. Make it a fantastic 2010!

Sure looks like a lot of crap in that candy bar (aka "Atkins Bar"). Good to see you cut them out Jimmy.
Yep. I'm probably better off without stuff like that.
