NOTE: I noticed my satiety today with the protein shakes was better than the first couple of days. I just wasn't hungry for a while after drinking my morning shake and that was a good thing. Doing a shake, then eating midday, and then one more shake worked well for me today and I enjoyed that. I backed off on using MCT oil in all my protein shakes because I got really nauseous when I did that yesterday. Forgot that was one of the side effects of consuming too much of it.
Overall this week, I'm doing well. Of course, I expected the first 20 pounds would probably be the easiest to lose. It's that 30 pounds I put back on in 2008 that has refused to budge that I'm ready to see go away for good! As I've stated, I'm doing those things that have helped me over the past couple of years to shed the pounds and sticking with them. This first week has been about the protein shakes and one sensible low-carb meal each day. I also cut out the diet sodas (and am still doing well with that!) and all the low-carb products. I'm keeping my total fluid intake significantly reduced from what I was drinking and that's helping as well.
Entering the new year, I feel like I'm on track to nip this thing in the bud! We'll keep hammering away at it and make it happen.

I noticed that you mentioned you were using two scoops of protein powder per shake. Dr. Eades book calls for three scoops per shake, which is how you were making the shakes last September. I'm curious why you're using less now.
I have a hard time with the shakes because it takes about two hours for my body to tell me that I'm no longer hungry after I drink them, but I suspect that three scoops would help with satiety.
THANKS SnowDog! Yes, he called for 3 scoops per shake in his plan but I'm admittedly tinkering a bit to see how I do on just the two scoops. It's working well for me...in fact, today I only had the two shakes with my one meal which was fat/protein-rich. :) If I see a deleterious effect from only using two vs. three scoops, then I might try the extra per shake. Right now what I'm doing seems to be doing the trick for me. I feel pretty full after drinking the shakes and just wait for the hunger signal to kick in 3-5 hours later.
Looking good, Jimmy! I was STARVING on the shakes but am trying again.
Incidentally, I'm not doing the Eades' plan exactly, but just tweaking it to my own personal preferences. :)
It kills me that a guy can say "the first 20 pounds will be easy to lose." I've never met a woman who could say that. But best of luck to you anyways :-)
Sorry Jenny, I didn't mean for that to come out that way. What I meant was the 20 pounds that I put on in 2009 shouldn't be hard to take off. It's that 30 pounds that has been stubbornly staying on my body since early 2008 that I REALLY want to get rid of. THANKS for your well wishes. :)
I realise that you are a knowledge and determined person which is what has kept you going and will give you success. However, it appears to me in time I have read your blog and menus that you are a person of extremes. I don't mean that to be unkind, and if it is inaccurate then no problem. I say that to say this, I am personally concerned that you've gone a little too far in cutting down your fluid intake. I can easily see that what Dr. Su said to you was a real light bulb moment, and I think he is correct. However going from a super lot down to just two glasses while intaking this much proteing seems a bit unwise to me. It IS your body, but I am afraid you'll get sick if you don't have I would think minimum 4 to 6 glasses of water to keep your kidneys and bladder free of protein buildup. I always felt badly when I did pure Atkins if I didn't get half my body weight in oz. of water. I am glad you gave up the diet soda, even if you decide later to do it in extreme moderation, as I know it makes me feel horrid. Anyway, I am truly concerned for your health!!Any way you could ask Dr. Su how much he recommends to drink?
I do think you are going to get this weight off and I truly applaud that but still want you to stay in excellent health!!
THANKS for your concern, Granny, but I should let you know that the glass size is 20 ounces. Dr. Su said to limit my intake to no more than six to eight 8-oz glasses, so I'm right in that range. :D
I do appreciate your bringing up what you said about "extremes" for people who think they need to do that. I am not personally engaged in anything that can be deemed as extreme -- just what I know and believe will work for me. So far it has been spectacular and I hope that the trend continues.
My health is superb right now and I intend on keeping it that way. THANK YOU again for your comments, Granny! :)
There is a very simple way to tell if you are getting enough water. Your urine will be a pale yellow color throughout the course of a day. People tend to forget that what they eat is mostly water. This all counts to your daily needs. As posted previously, the whole 64 oz a day is a big myth as people fail to take into account the water in the food they ingest.
You're exactly right, JD. Quite frankly, I'm not having to "go" nearly as much as I used to. Even my morning visit to the bathroom yields that pale yellow color as you mentioned whereas it has been dark yellow or clear previously. I would think cutting out the diet sodas has helped with this, too.
Parenthetically I should add that if you are drinking too much water your urine color is going to be clear and not pale yellow.
I used to drink upwards of two 2 liter bottles of diet soda a day and my urine color would inevitably be clear colored.
So you have a simple method of knowing of over consumption and under consumption.
You're exactly right, JD! When I was drinking upwards of two gallons of fluid a day, my urine was mostly clear. I did that during my 2004 weight loss and just continued it. Never in my wildest dreams did I ever think that would contribute to weight gain, but I suppose there is some merit to what Dr. Su shared with me. I'm finding out now.
No worries, Jimmy. I hear guys say it all the time. And, unfortunately, it seems to be true that men can drop weight faster than women. Frustrating, but true.
THANKS Jenny! We guys don't have all the complex hormonal issues that you women-folk do. That's why I admire women who are able to beat obesity.
Thanks Jimmy for clearing that up as to how much you are drinking. It appeared to me that you were trying your hardest to drink almost nothing?!? Thus the comment about extremes...gallon or water, lots of diet soda, to two little glasses of water. Now I get it! The amount you are drinking certainly seems reasonable and balanced. Getting rid of the diet soda has to be beneficial.
I am totally interested in how this works for you, as I had been thinking for a while that my constant drinking was not good for me. I am in the stage of figuring out what is going to really work for me as well!
Thanks for being so transparent which is truly an inspiration to me. Often people begin blogs with all the determination in the world, seemingly, and then some weeks or months later teir blog quits!! So thanks for hanging in there and letting us see the struggles of a real person!!
