NOTE: HAPPY HALLOWEEN! I have a love/hate relationship with this day because while I enjoy the fun of seeing kids get all dressed up in costumes, it truly saddens me that so much sugary garbage is passed out that is then ingested without any regard to the health consequences on the innocent children who consume it. I wish there was a way to separate the concept of giving children candy as a "treat" and instead do something like what my friend Connie Bennett, author of Sugar Shock, suggests: CLICK HERE!

NOTE: Christine and I both have had the opportunity to be on local television in recent weeks. A couple of weeks ago, my local CBS affiliate WSPA-TV asked me to be on a guest panel on their "Main Event" segment for the "Scene on 7" program to discuss a couple of hot topics on October 14, 2009. Here's the video of me commenting on a pastor wanting to burn non-KJV Bibles on Halloween as well as the whole Rush Limbaugh wanting to buy an NFL team:
As for Christine, her moment of local TV fame happened on Thursday when her rock collection was featured on that same show:
They found us because of our YouTube video series and have asked BOTH of us to come back on the show together in November. COOL!

It's so rewarding to find a way of eating that allows you the privilege of enjoying a healthy lifestyle that is completely doable for life. Just today one of my volleyball buddies who has struggled with his weight and health for many years on Weight Watchers went out and bought Dr. Atkins' New Diet Revolution. WOO HOO! He just so happens to know someone with a little experience on that diet. :D

NOTE: Discouragement is something I see happening with people all the time in their low-carb lifestyle because they think they should be losing more weight, looking a certain way, or finding some measure of "success" that they deem appropriate. But one thing I've learned living this way for nearly six years is to just keep working the plan even when it seems like on the outside it is not working for you. Controlling your carbohydrate intake is about so much more than weight loss and it is critical to remember this when those negative thoughts begin to enter your head. While you may not necessarily "feel" or "see" it happening, incredible changes for the better are happening within you that are making you healthier than you ever thought possible when you are livin' la vida low-carb -- so NEVER GIVE UP!

NOTE: A funny thing has happened lately that I can't help but notice. More and more people I talk to out in the community, at my church, and even complete strangers that I meet for the first time are telling me that they've decided to cut sugar and carbs way down in their diet. I'm always curious about what leads people to make such a life-altering decision and most of them are convinced that they are being harmed by consuming too many carbohydrates. WOO HOO! Great news!
I was speaking with a friend of mine who sings in the choir with me about this today and so I asked her what she eats in her diet. She went on to describe her typical day: cereal or oatmeal with fat-free milk for breakfast, air pretzels with hummus for lunch, and chicken or fish with apples for supper. She said she doesn't eat a lot of beef, but will have it occasionally since her husband, who is also eating sugar-free, enjoys it so much.
This gave me the perfect opportunity to educate her about how even foods that aren't sweet on the tongue can turn to sugar in the body (i.e. cereal, oatmeal, pretzels, etc.) and that switching out these carbs for other choices is better. Eat protein at every meal and INCREASE your fat, I told her. You could see by the look on her face that she had never heard these things before. It's always a good feeling to share the truth and let others decide for themselves about what to do.
But I was encouraged to see actual changes happening in her and the excitement she had about the results she had seen even with nominal changes. That's one of the good things about what I get to do on a daily basis. Sharing knowledge, letting people try it for themselves, and then reaping the benefits of implementing key strategies to bring about necessary changes. It's the very essence of livin' la vida low-carb and I never get tired of hearing about how it is changing people's lives.

October 24, 2009 Low-Carb Menu
8:30AM
Zero net carb bagel with sugar-free blackberry preserves
Diet Rite
9:00AM
3-hour youth football refereeing
12:45PM
3 hamburger patties with cheese, tomato, and mayo
Salad (lettuce, greens, tomato, cucumbers, cheese) with Ranch dressing
Diet Coke with lime
10:15PM
4 slices of zero net carb bread with Velveeta cheese
Jello brand sugar-free chocolate mousse with whipped cream
Diet Rite
NOTE: Today was the last week of the youth flag football season with Upward at my church. I really enjoy being a referee because it gives me good exercise while doing something that most adults have unfortunately refused to step up to the plate to help out with. There's nothing better than to serve in a position where kids are helped and so they can see the example of service for others -- and someday hopefully mimic when they are adults. It's a true privilege to be a part of this amazing ministry opportunity and I can't wait for January when the basketball season starts up. More running up and down a court with a bunch of youth!

Greens salad with vinaigrette dressing
Sugar-free vanilla frozen yogurt with strawberries and almonds

4 slices of zero net carb bread with Velveeta cheese
Diet Rite
NOTE: We had a coupon for a very nice restaurant up the road from us in Landrum, SC that specializes in fine dining, so we decided to give them a try for lunch today. Little did I know that "hamburger" on the menu that I ordered was made from local grass-fed cows and it was one of the finest cuts available -- filet mignon! WOW! And it tasted absolutely divine. It's nice to get treated like that from time to time and the price was very affordable, too. You gotta love that!
Christine and I are also trying out some new zero net carb bread products that we'll probably do a video about real soon. Not too bad for low-carb bread and really delicious with butter or cheese. It's nice to have options in your healthy low-carb lifestyle.

75-minute competitive volleyball

3 hamburger patties with cheese, tomato, pickle and mayo
Salad (lettuce, greens, tomato, cucumbers, cheese) with Ranch dressing

NOTE: Christine cooked me up some really delicious pork chops for lunch today and man oh man I loved 'em! Saturated in deliciously healthy butter, they were absolutely delectable to sink my teeth into. What's funny is growing up I used to HATE pork chops because I suppose they weren't cooked very well (sorry Mom!). Now they are suh-weet!
I think I pushed my body a little too much today because by the time I got finished with the refereeing and playing volleyball for about an hour, I was achy and hungry. I don't like letting myself get hungry ever and I could sense I needed to eat since I was getting a little lightheaded. I told my teammates I needed to go and I did. It's always important to listen to your body because it will let you know when you need to back off. The key is listening to those signals and adhering to them.

Christine thought it was funny taking my picture during this torture and I let her have it:

Ahhhhh, you gotta have some fun in life every once in a while! As soon as the blood was drawn, we headed back home to South Carolina and it was good to be home sweet home again. I love getting away for a few days sometimes but it's good to get home. :D

NOTE: During the hot dog days of summertime, drinking protein shakes is actually a refreshing way to get nourishment while cooling off from the scorching hot sun. But today was definitely NOT summer anymore as the weather took a sudden turn colder here in South Carolina. BRRRRR, who turned on the cold weather?! Needless to say, after my morning shake, I wasn't much in the mood for any the rest of the day. Even still, I kept my meals low in carbohydrates, high in fat, and oh so delicious. That's one thing I'll NEVER skimp on with my healthy low-carb lifestyle. It's gotta taste good so it can be a permanent lifestyle change I'll do forever and ever. If you ever feel like you have to eat something that tastes awful on your low-carb diet, think again! Find the foods you love and enjoy and leave that other stuff for someone else to eat.

Since I'm no longer strictly on the Eades plan, I'm allowing myself that flexibility when I want to eat food rather than sucking down a protein shake. Even still, I'll likely continue incorporating protein shakes into my daily routine because I'm enjoying the convenience. GOOD STUFF!

NOTE: Ran out of my heavy cream today and may try using some coconut milk in the shakes soon. Someone asked me why I put Truvia in my shakes and it's just a personal preference thing for taste. With the proper amount of ice cubes, this can whip up into a very satisfying milkshake consistency for me. I'm LOVING these shakes more now than I did a month ago. Weird how that works, but I'm not complaining.

October 14, 2009 Low-Carb Menu
10:15AM
Chocolate strawberry protein shake (3 scoops chocolate EAS low-carb whey protein powder, frozen strawberries, 2 packets of Truvia, heavy whipping cream, water, ice cubes)
2:30PM
Meatballs with marinara, provolone cheese, Parmesan cheese
Greens salad with tomato, goat cheese, and Ranch dressing
Diet Coke with lime
8:00PM
Chocolate strawberry protein shake (3 scoops chocolate EAS low-carb whey protein powder, frozen strawberries, 2 packets of Truvia, heavy whipping cream, water, ice cubes)
NOTE: I ran out of the Enova oil and I decided not to purchase any more of it. At this point I'm seeing and receiving the benefits of the shakes and would love to just do without it. I may start adding my MCT oil and/or coconut oil to the shakes as a way to get that into my diet rather than taking it straight up. It's interesting that I feel completely satisfied consuming two shakes as meal replacements rather than forcing myself to drink three shakes with the one meal. Why force the issue when your body doesn't want it? So I'm not gonna. Loving this week again because it has forced me to keep my energy intake in check.

October 13, 2009 Low-Carb Menu
8:45AM
Chocolate protein shake (3 scoops chocolate EAS low-carb whey protein powder, 1 packet of Truvia, heavy whipping cream, water, ice cubes) with Enova oil
2:00PM
Shrimp, chicken, and beef steak stir fried with green peppers, onions, pico de gallo, and cheese
Diet Coke with lime
7:00PM
140-minute competitive volleyball
9:30PM
Vanilla berry protein shake (3 scoops vanilla EAS low-carb whey protein powder, 1 packet of Truvia, sugar-free berry flavoring, heavy whipping cream, water, ice cubes)
NOTE: I only got in two shakes today because I missed consuming one prior to my volleyball workout. And I felt it when I was out on the court, too, because I got really hungry. Oh well, lesson learned. As I was playing, I noticed my right ankle was beginning to hurt like a "high ankle" sprain. It didn't swell, but it was so sore like I may have slightly torn something. I'll keep an eye on it and determine what to do about it if it doesn't get better. During last night's volleyball, I also burst a blood vessel in my left thumb. It's always something! The good news is my diet was fantastic today. :D

Meatballs with marinara sauce, Asiago cheese, parmesan cheese

Chocolate protein shake (3 scoops EAS low-carb whey protein powder, 1 packet of Truvia, heavy whipping cream, water, ice cubes)
NOTE: Started back on the shakes again today and it wasn't bad at all. Having done this previously for two weeks, I kinda knew what to expect. I actually ENJOYED the simplicity of making these delicious shakes again with one low-carb meal. The results after just one day doing this again have shown me this is EXACTLY what I need to be doing right now. I like what I'm seeing and it's giving me hope that this is something I could keep doing with great success.

3 pastured eggs cooked in butter with cheese
3 sausage patties
Diet Coke with Splenda
9:00AM
3-hour youth football refereeing
2:45PM
Chicken wings, steak, crab legs, and pork BBQ
Side salad with greens, tomato, cheese, bacon and Ranch dressing

NOTE: Today was Day 6 of Week four on The 6-Week Cure For The Middle-Aged Middle by Drs. Mike and Mary Dan Eades. Because I'll be transitioning back to Week 1 of The 6-Week Cure again starting on Monday, today is the last day I'll officially list the book on my menus blog. There was some slight criticism made about my attempt on this plan by the Eades, but I've been very pleased with the outcome overall. I'm beginning to discover ways that I can keep the momentum going and look forward to implementing these things in the coming days and weeks. Hopefully it has worked just as well for you.

10-ounce sirloin steak

Salad with greens, tomato, cheese, bacon, and Ranch dressing
Diet Coke with lime
9:15PM
2 beef hamburger patties with cheese, tomato, pickle, and Romaine lettuce
2 Cocoa-licious Yes! To Cookies
Diet Coke with Splenda
NOTE: Today was Day 5 of Week four on The 6-Week Cure For The Middle-Aged Middle by Drs. Mike and Mary Dan Eades. I'm noticing as I'm approaching the end of the second two weeks of The 6-Week Cure plan that I seemed to do better during the shakes weeks with weight loss than I am now. However, I've yet to be hungry during the past two weeks unlike those first two weeks. Beginning on Monday, I will go back to Week 1 again with the three shakes and a meal plan for a week and probably cycle between that and the "Meat Weeks" to see what impact it has. I'm feeling fantastic and healthy as always with just a few stubborn pounds that like to hold on for dear life for some reason. It's all good, though. I'm not discouraged and you know I'll NEVER give up!

NOTE: Today was Day 4 of Week four on The 6-Week Cure For The Middle-Aged Middle by Drs. Mike and Mary Dan Eades. Finally got in three meals today because quite frankly it has been difficult to get in eating that many times during these two weeks. I'm sure there's some sort of rhyme or reason to eating this many times, but for the life of me I don't get it. Actually, Christine hasn't been eating more than a couple of meals a day either. She's still doing fantastic by the way!

-- WEEK FOUR: DAY 31:30PM
Pork tenderloin, green beans, sweet potato
Diet Dr. Pepper
8:30PM
Pulled pork BBQ
Diet Coke with Splenda
NOTE: Today was Day 3 of Week four on The 6-Week Cure For The Middle-Aged Middle by Drs. Mike and Mary Dan Eades. I was in the mood for some BBQ today, so I had some tenderloin with a little bit of veggies for lunch and then some pulled pork BBQ for supper. Nothing tastes better in the South than a really well-cooked hunk of meat! And it's perfect for The 6-Week Cure.

-- WEEK FOUR: DAY 22:00PM
3 hamburger patties with cheese and bacon
2 wings with garlic and Parmesan cheese
Diet Coke with lime
8:45PM
2 Hardee's low-carb Thickburgers
Diet Coke with Splenda
NOTE: Today was Day 2 of Week four on The 6-Week Cure For The Middle-Aged Middle by Drs. Mike and Mary Dan Eades. Somebody asked me if I skipped breakfast purposely and the answer is it just happened naturally. The book says to eat THREE meals of at least 3 ounces of meat at each sitting and perhaps I should be doing that. But it is very difficult for me to eat when I'm just not hungry. Maybe it makes a difference, maybe not. I'm enjoying these "Meat Weeks" better than the shakes, though. Marching onward!

NOTE: Today was Day 1 of Week four on The 6-Week Cure For The Middle-Aged Middle by Drs. Mike and Mary Dan Eades. Now that we're back home and at the midway point of this plan, it'll be interesting to see what happens the next week heading into the final two weeks of the program. If you haven't reached your goal yet, then they encourage people to go back to Weeks 1-2 again at the end of Week 4. I may consider doing this...I'll decide by the end of the week.

-- WEEK THREE: DAY 712:00PM
Hardee's low-carb breakfast bowl
Coke Zero
8:45PM
2 Hardee's low-carb Thickburgers
Diet Coke with Splenda
NOTE: Today was Day 7 of Week three on The 6-Week Cure For The Middle-Aged Middle by Drs. Mike and Mary Dan Eades. We traveled back from our glorious trip to Nashville this weekend and it was good to get home. Of course, being on the road most of the day required us to eat on the go, so Hardee's was my friend today. It's not ideal to eat this way, but I always like having options when traveling.
Okay, so Christine and I have been on The 6-Week Cure for the most part now for three weeks and here are the results:
Jimmy--14.6 pounds lost--2 inches off waist
Christine--8.6 pounds lost--1 1/2 inches off waist
While the weight loss slowed down for me probably because of my sickness this past week, Christine ROCKED it by nearly doubling her pounds lost. I'm so proud of her and she is absolutely STOKED about it. We look forward to Week 4 starting tomorrow.

NOTE: Today was Day 6 of Week three on The 6-Week Cure For The Middle-Aged Middle by Drs. Mike and Mary Dan Eades. Being away from home while following a specific diet program can always be challenging, but you do the best you can to stay on plan. Tom Naughton's wife was extremely gracious to make a nice omelette for breakfast for us and then that tantalizing spaghetti squash meal for lunch. OMG! Amazing! Poor Tom had to sit there with his protein shake watching us eat it because he's in Week 1 of The 6-Week Cure. I feel your pain, buddy!

It felt kinda like prom night getting all decked out for Isabeau Miller's wedding at Union Station in downtown Nashville, Tennessee. I'd never been to a wedding where the dress for the guests was formal, but it was a load of fun. Christine and I searched everywhere for the perfect dress for her and I think we done good. And at the last minute, we found a matching vest and tie set at the tuxedo shop that put the finishing touches on what would be a fantabulous wardrobe for us. We felt incredible in our new digs.

The wedding itself was absolutely beautiful and both Isabeau and Jon were stunning. You could tell these two people are madly in love with each other as the entire nation saw a few seasons back on "The Biggest Loser" when they did a makeover week. That same passionate love and adoration for each other was on full display and I was so impressed by the way their family fawned over both of them by encouraging and uplifting these two human beings for their extraordinary talents and characteristics. It was difficult for anyone there not to feel moved by the entire experience.

A few of Beau's former "Biggest Loser" contestant friends showed up at the wedding including Jim, Nicole, Julie and Holly who all looked FABULOUS! It was pretty cool meeting them in person for the first time although I had spoken with them through blog interviews and e-mail previously. Jim's wife remembered that I sent him some of my chocolate bars as a thank you present after the interview. Nicole was a complete nut...and so full of energy! Julie's husband recognized me and asked "Are you Jimmy Moore?" Why yes I am! Spoke with Julie and it was so loud I caught about every other word. Holly was probably the most shy of the group, but she looked incredible. I was glad to see they all are still active promoting healthy living!

Finally, we met up with one of our FitCamp buddies from last August when we were beat to smithereens by Isabeau for two weeks. Ahhhhh, the memories of that experience. Seeing her and meeting her husband Chris was delightful since we didn't know too many other people there. All in all, it was a fantastic wedding. We went back to Tom's house and I watched the Tennessee-Auburn game with him before hitting the sack to head home tomorrow. What a weekend!

8-ounce beef burger patty with onions and mushrooms

NOTE: Today was Day 5 of Week three on The 6-Week Cure For The Middle-Aged Middle by Drs. Mike and Mary Dan Eades. And it was travel day up I-26 and I-40 from Spartanburg, SC to Nashville, TN to attend former "Biggest Loser" contestant Isabeau Miller's wedding to her longtime love Jon Peterson.

We know a lot of people in Nashville, but FAT HEAD filmmaker Tom Naugton and his wife are new to the area and were gracious enough to host our quick visit to Music City. Their two little girls are the most adorable in the entire world. It was such a pleasure getting to know them a little more meeting in person for the first time. In fact, it was a question whether or not I was a real person. So he pulled out his stethoscope to confirm:

LOL! Yes, we had a load of fun. Anyone who has encountered Tom at his blog or in his documentary will already feel like they know him. And meeting him in person now, I can say that he's EXACTLY the same way. What a guy and I can't wait to have him join us on The 3rd Annual Low-Carb Cruise to the Bahamas.
Still felt awful today for that six-hour drive to Nashville, but I wouldn't have missed this weekend for anything!

Even still, I got in four straight hours of exercise today. WOO HOO! Gearing up for a great weekend attending a friend's wedding in Nashville and hanging out with my buddy Tom Naughton from the FAT HEAD movie. Should be exciting!
