NOTE: I noticed my satiety today with the protein shakes was better than the first couple of days. I just wasn't hungry for a while after drinking my morning shake and that was a good thing. Doing a shake, then eating midday, and then one more shake worked well for me today and I enjoyed that. I backed off on using MCT oil in all my protein shakes because I got really nauseous when I did that yesterday. Forgot that was one of the side effects of consuming too much of it.
Overall this week, I'm doing well. Of course, I expected the first 20 pounds would probably be the easiest to lose. It's that 30 pounds I put back on in 2008 that has refused to budge that I'm ready to see go away for good! As I've stated, I'm doing those things that have helped me over the past couple of years to shed the pounds and sticking with them. This first week has been about the protein shakes and one sensible low-carb meal each day. I also cut out the diet sodas (and am still doing well with that!) and all the low-carb products. I'm keeping my total fluid intake significantly reduced from what I was drinking and that's helping as well.
Entering the new year, I feel like I'm on track to nip this thing in the bud! We'll keep hammering away at it and make it happen.

NOTE: I've now gone three full days without a diet soda and I honestly don't miss them at all right now. I think part of the credit for killing my craving for them is the significant reduction in my total fluid intake. Since I've learned to make do with a couple of glasses of water a day the past few days (I had just two again today) along with the fluids in my protein shakes, I have no desire at all to put them inside of my body. Now, for those of you who have been following my writings for a while, you know what a monumental thing this is since I have been a diet soda drinker and a half ever since my 180-pound weight loss experience in 2004 where I replaced my sugary sodas with diet sodas.
I have often questioned why diet soda is bad for me and even asked once asked a question in a blog post that seemed obvious to me at the time: which is healthier, diet soda or sugary soda? But I've tried to give up my diet sodas beginning with my 2007 New Year's resolution to chunk 'em from my diet, but I didn't make it very far into February that year before I couldn't stand it anymore. And my thinking about drinking them was then reinforced by my readers many of whom said diet soda was harmless and I believed it too. It's three years later now and I'm wondering what is right for me and if this has any connection to my slight weight gain. Perhaps. Maybe not.
What I do know is I don't want any diet sodas right now and actually they seem pretty disgusting to think about. One bad habit I have had with drinking is gulping my beverages. I could down a whole glass of diet soda pretty quickly and then get another...and another...and another. Some may think that's an addiction and maybe on some level it has been. But I am apt to think it was more of what Dr. Su noted to me in my conversation with him last week a habit of drinking too many fluids and the results so far are bearing that out. It never occurred to me that drinking too much fluid would be leading to weight gain when all of them are calorie-free. I'll continue to track my progress on this, but it seems I'm on to something that will be much better for me over the long-term than a measly little weight gain the past couple of years.
THANKS for your feedback everyone! Excellent comments and advice.

NOTE: I received a letter from the United States Postal Service today (this can NEVER be good!) that informed me one of my packages that contained my new book 21 Life Lessons From Livin' La Vida Low-Carb in it had been lost in the mail. Apparently the book was separated from the envelope in transit and the letter asked for a description of the contents so they can return it back to me. ARGH! I have mailed well over 100 autographed copies of my new book to people all over the United States and around the world the past couple of months and that's the first time that has happened. I filled out the form and hope they find it in one piece. Or at the very least, someone who needs to see the message of livin' la vida low-carb will check it out!
I continued my quest to get my weight back down again today by imploring strategies that have worked for me in the short term over the past couple of years. One of those was when I did Drs. Mike and Mary Dan Eades' The 6-Week Cure when you consume three protein shakes and one sensible low-carb meal daily for two weeks. I did so well on that a few months back that I decided to give it another go. So far, so good! And cutting down on my total fluid intake is working well for me too. Today, in addition to my protein shakes, I had just two glasses of water again. This is significantly less than the amount of water/diet soda I was previously drinking.
Oh yeah, the diet soda. It's not in my menus right now because I'm not drinking it. I've tried long and hard to give it up or at least cut way back and for the past couple of days I really haven't wanted one. This is odd because anyone who knows me personally realizes I am a heavy drinker (of fluids, not alcohol!) and cutting back as much as I have is a minor miracle. But I'm doing it and I don't miss it at all. My trips to the bathroom are much lower and I feel fine with little thirst. If I get thirsty, then I take a sip (rather than a gulp) of water. All's well!
I appreciate all the well wishes and advice that people have offered up for me over the past few days. I'm doing what's right for me and will triumph over this with my head held high. The first 20 pounds isn't my biggest concern...it's that stubborn 30 pounds that came on in 2008 that refused to let go that I'd like to see disappear. I'm working my plan and will stick with this as long as it takes to get my weight back down. In the meantime, I'm thankful for my incredible health and feeling fantastic! Never stop focusing on the good things that are happening with your health while you are shedding the pounds! YOU CAN DO IT TOO!

7:00PM
100-minute competitive volleyball
9:15PM
2 eggs cooked in butter
NOTE: As I shared over at my blog today, the cumulative effects of two years worth of weight gains beginning with the sudden 30-pound rise in 2008 followed by another 20-pound increase in 2009 has got me in a place where I have to get this back under control. As I wrote in that column, I'm getting checked out for any thyroid issues which may be hindering my efforts. In the meantime, though, I have seen some success here and there over the past couple of years doing various strategies and you'll be seeing those here in my menus.
One thing I never considered before was suggested by Carbohydrates Can Kill author Dr. Robert Su who I met for lunch last week when I was visiting Virginia for the Christmas holidays. He noticed I drank a lot of fluids as well as used the restroom a lot and he asked me if that was something that happened often. I said for as long as I could remember all the way back to childhood I've always drank a lot and peed a lot. He suggested that perhaps I don't necessarily have thirst, but that I'm drinking a lot out of habit. Hmmm. I never thought of it that way.
He also suggested three other observations about urinary frequency and thirst that you may be interested in:
I've been ruled out for diabetes mellitus and diabetes insipidus, so #1 is out. I went to see a urologist several times in the past few years and he didn't find any infections or inflammation and my prostate is excellent. It is possible one of the "surrounding tissues or organs" is irritated in some way, but nobody has found that yet. So #2 is out. That leaves #3 as the most likely culprit in my case -- "over supply of fluids." I've always drank a lot and some people thought I was diabetic since a severe thirst is a sign of that. But I don't eat a lot of salt (sweet is what my taste buds prefer) and I'm not experiencing high blood sugar levels either.
To remedy this "habit" of drinking so much, I limited my fluid intake today to the three protein shakes and two 8-ounce glasses of water. What is most amazing is I wasn't as thirsty as I thought I would be. I have become so accustomed to drinking and drinking and drinking some more that when I didn't do it today it was odd. But my bathroom visits went way down and I survived on significantly less fluids that ever before. Perhaps this is part of the missing element in my quest to return my weight to its proper place. We shall see.
My health is stellar right now despite the elevation in my weight and that is gratifying to me knowing my low-carb lifestyle is putting me in a better position than I ever was before. I'm gonna get this extra weight off of me by continuing to do those things that have helped me before. Some people will scorn my decisions and that's okay. That merely motivates me to do this even more and I WILL succeed. Nothing is gonna stop me from getting this under control and I'm stoked that this next chapter in my journey has begun.

He also suggested three other observations about urinary frequency and thirst that you may be interested in:
1. Both diabetes mellitus and diabetes insipidus share the same symptoms, polyuria (lots of urine) and polydispsia (lots of thirst, therefore, lots of fluid supply.) However, as stated in my book, diabetes insipidus is a disease involving the posterior lobe of the pituitary gland, which fails to produce and secret antidiuretic hormone (ADH.) The urine is neither concentrated nor containing sugar.
2. Urinary frequency without voluminous urine usually means problem(s) of the bladder and/or urethra or their surrounding tissues or organs. For example, inflammation or infection of the urethra and/or bladder can cause frequent urination. As said, if the bladder is pressured from outside, urinary frequency happens.
3. If urinary frequency with voluminous urine each time, the problem is a result of over supply of fluids. This situation can be a result of genuine thirst (such as diabetes insipidus) or a habit. If the situation from genuine thirst, it is possible from foods or hyperglycemia. If the situation from a habit, using a 64 ounce container of water may help monitor and correct the habit.
I've been ruled out for diabetes mellitus and diabetes insipidus, so #1 is out. I went to see a urologist several times in the past few years and he didn't find any infections or inflammation and my prostate is excellent. 12:30PM
30 garlic/Parmesan and BBQ chicken wings
Diet Coke with lime
2 bites of chocolate cake
6:45PM
Sugar-free chocolate creme cookies
NOTE: Happy birthday to me! Yes, I was a Christmas baby and I didn't like it very much growing up as a kid. Here ya go, Jimmy, here's your ONE birthday present along with your Christmas presents (meanwhile, my brother Kevin and sister Beverly had birthdays in August and September respectively and got PLENTY of stuff--NO FAIR! LOL!). Now that I'm older, I kinda like having the birthday around Christmas because everyone's already celebrating the holiday season and in a good festive mood. Today I asked Christine if we could do something I've never done before.

Because my birthday fell on a Sunday, I wanted to go out to one of those sports bar places with TVs everywhere to watch the NFL football games in the second to last week of the regular season. And the place was packed out with fans of all sorts watching their teams. It was a hoot hearing the fans of the Pittsburgh Steelers get all happy when their team made a good play and then ruckus clapping from the Baltimore Ravens fans whenever their team was doing well. We sat in a spot where I could watch about six different games at one time and I LOVED IT!
Ordered some non-breaded chicken wings with a Parmesan cheese and garlic butter sauce that was divine. Christine loved the BBQ and I ate a few of hers. In the end, I consumed 30 of those bad boys and loved every bite. Christine also got herself a big slice of chocolate cake which I had a couple of bites of. I'll admit, it was good...but I wouldn't have been able to eat that whole thing if I wanted to. All in all, it was a great way to spend my 38th birthday and I had an awesome time. I wish everyday could be like this! :D

NOTE: After a glorious Christmas week with Christine's family in Virginia Beach, it was time to come home today. It was tough leaving little Brianna knowing she's gonna grow up so fast before we get to see her again in about another year. Seeing her makes us long even more to have children of our own someday when God blesses us with the pitter patter of little feet. Until then, we'll show BriBri more love than she will know what to do with!
The drive home was pretty treacherous with bumper-to-bumper traffic for a long stretch going through North Carolina. This normal 6 1/2 drive turned into nearly 9 hours. Looks like EVERYBODY had the same idea to come home today at the same time. But we needed to be back in time for our duties in church tomorrow morning...plus my birthday is tomorrow and I asked Christine if I could do something I've never done before that I've always wanted to do. I'll tell you more about that and how it went tomorrow! :)

NOTE: Christmas Day!!! I love this special event that brings families together to show love to each other by exchanging gifts. It's a tradition that I wish we could celebrate much more often than we do. No, it's not always ideal to have a bunch of people who only see each other once a year, but it is what the season is all about. Without our families, nothing we do in life really matters. I am thankful not only for my immediate family as well as Christine's family who we went to see (including that adorable little niece of ours Brianna you see in that picture above!), but ALL OF YOU for making what I do here and all of my other sites on a daily basis worthwhile. Merry Christmas to you and keep on livin' la vida low-carb!
And I stayed low-carb with my meal today...aren't you proud of me? How about YOU? Did you stick to your low-carb plan?

12:15PM
Turkey, meatloaf, broccoli with cheese
Diet Pepsi with lemon
9:00PM
Turkey and mayo
Splenda-sweetened diet soda

NOTE: Today I had an extraordinary opportunity to meet and dine with a low-carb doctor in the Virginia Beach area named Dr. Robert K. Su, author of a fantastic low-carb book release entitled Carbohydrates Can Kill. I was privileged to interview him on my podcast show in April 2009 for about an hour, but today I got to sit under the tutelage of this very wise doctor who not only recommends livin' la vida low-carb to his patients, but also lives it himself! For three hours we chatted about anything and everything about low-carb living, health, and anything else you can think of. What a thrill it was to hear someone speak so passionately about a subject that you can tell is near and dear to everything he does. I gave him an autographed copy of my new book to thank him for all he has done to help further the cause of low-carb living. This was a nice Christmas present for me and Christine!

NOTE: Today started out on a rather unusual note. This is probably in the TMI department, but here goes anyway. I woke up and noticed I had blood on my underwear. EEEEEK! When I showed Christine, she just about freaked out. She insisted I go to the emergency clinic down the road in Virginia Beach and I reluctantly agreed. Turns out I had an infection that was bleeding on me and I needed to be on an antibiotic. He also found a couple of ringworm spots that required a prescription cream. YIKES! Merry Christmas to me. LOL! At least I got it taken care of before anything worse happened. This was WAY more excitement two days before Christmas than I wanted.

8:15PM
Salad greens with cheese, tomato, and Ranch dressing
2 hamburger patties with cheddar cheese, tomato, pickle, and mayo
Hershey's chocolate cake with vanilla ice cream
Diet Coke with lime
NOTE: Had some bison for lunch today for the first time ever. It's a different flavor than beef, but pretty tasty in its own right. I like changing things up and eating something new every once in a while.
And yes, you saw right -- I ate some chocolate cake today. The funny part is it didn't really taste that good and I don't know why I wanted it. It was a good reminder that those things I thought I'd miss on my low-carb lifestyle really aren't worth eating anyway. Low-carb changes your wants and desires from foods you think you can't live without into ones that you truly can't live without.

NOTE: What a day this was! Waking up in a hotel in Connecticut bright and early, I got my fill of my favorite breakfast foods before being picked up to go to the recording studios for dLifeTV. The theme of the day was hurry up and wait, and wait, and wait. I'm used to this having done some local television work, but it was an exciting opportunity to share about healthy low-carb living. When it was time for my segment, they put make-up on my face (first time ever wearing eye shadow!) and sprayed about 10 cans of hairspray on my head. Then it was showtime with a very nice broadcaster with Type 1 diabetes asking about my experience. He especially liked it when I said, "I try to eat like I'm a diabetic so I don't become diabetic." It was over and done with just when it was getting started. But I enjoyed the experience and they seemed to like having me on the show very much. What an honor and I can't wait for you guys to see it. I don't have date when it will air yet, but I'll let you know.

It's fun to see people so excited about showing love for those special people in their lives.

NOTE: Busy day today...got to interview the great low-carb diabetes legend himself Dr. Richard Bernstein again for a special podcast episode coming up in early January 2010 with the best interview guests of the year as voted on by my listeners. He had so many things happening during the interview, including the telephone making a clicking noise, dropping the call several times, and an emergency down in Texas with a diabetic woman he had been treating having difficulty getting the supplies she needed in the nursing home she was put in. The family was obviously upset and Dr. Bernstein kept taking calls about it throughout our interview trying to help them out. It just shows how much this man truly cares personally for his patients. The interview was FANTASTIC with him answering questions people had for him following my previous interview in June 2009 and I can't wait to share it with you on January 4, 2010.

NOTE: We went back to the neurosurgeon's office again today for Christine to get an MRI on her neck to see what's going on with the pain she is experiencing. She is deathly terrified of the MRI machine with all the clanging it makes and plus she's claustrophobic, too! She was instructed to take an oxycodone and a valium one hour before coming to the office and that must have helped somewhat because she did a wonderful job. We'll find out more next Thursday at her appointment, but the MRI guy said everything seemed to look pretty good. Crossing our fingers and praying for the best!
I got a call from one of my volleyball buddies just before 7:00PM today asking if I was coming to volleyball tonight. I was told earlier in the week that the gym would not be available at the church since there was a Christmas party happening in there, but nobody was in the building except for some tables and chairs. So I drove one mile to the church and we play for over two hours with a lot of people about half my age. I enjoy the competition and exercise from volleyball, but I do feel it a bit the next day. Am I getting old or what? :)

NOTE: Today started off with a bang -- LITERALLY! At 4:00AM we had a huge thunderstorm rolling through our area that climaxed with the loudest clap of thunder I've heard in a very long time. I could feel the adrenaline rushing through my body after that happened and I was officially wide awake at a time I'm usually sawing some serious Z's. So I got up and started working. Yippee!
We had a doctor's appointment for Christine again today because she's been having some pain coming from her neck where she had C5 fusion surgery earlier this year shooting down into her right arm. She was fearing that they may have to do another surgery. The neurosurgeon said the fusion looks good and he can't understand why she's in pain. We'll have an MRI done tomorrow and an appointment next Thursday to see what to do next. In the meantime, Christine's got a whole slew of pain medications to help her deal with the pain in her neck that's not named Jimmy Moore. :)
While we were at the doctor's office, I received an e-mail from a producer at the CNBC-TV show called dLife. They said they wanted to conduct an interview with me next week at their studio in Connecticut to discuss my new book 21 Life Lessons From Livin' La Vida Low-Carb. This came completely out of the blue because I had not contacted them requesting an interview and I don't have diabetes. This nationally-televised show focused on diabetes has been following my work for years and wanted to bring me to inspire their half million viewers with what I've learned about healthy living. What an opportunity and I am excited about sharing in a pre-recorded interview next Wednesday afternoon. I'll let you know when it airs so you can watch!
Needless to say, at the end of this long day, I was worn completely out. I slept like a baby tonight!
