February 27, 2011 Low-Carb Menu

12:45PM
7-ounce sirloin steak with pepper seasoning, 1/4 cup grilled green beans and 1/4 cup mashed cauliflower with 3 Tbs butter
2 ounces sugar-free dark chocolate

6:45PM
7-ounce sirloin steak with pepper seasoning, 1/4 cup grilled green beans and 1/4 cup mashed cauliflower with 3 Tbs butter
2 ounces sugar-free dark chocolate

NOTE: Christine and I were a couple of pitiful old saps today when we woke up. She had a massive headache that actually kept her at home from church and that nagging sore lower back was still up to no good. I ended up going to the service and singing in the choir despite the pain. We combined the adult and youth choirs for today's service and so they took out all of the nice, comfortable, cushy chairs we usually sit in and we had to stand for a half-hour through the beginning of the worship service. Normally that wouldn't be a big problem, but my back--OH MY ACHING BACK! I don't know what I did to it, but it's a doozy right now. I'll probably be going to the massage therapist tomorrow to see what she can do to help. The thing I hate the most about my back being injured is the fact I can't get in my exercise--no volleyball, no yoga, no intervals or weight lifting. But I want to be ALL THE WAY better before I attempt to jump back into the fitness fray again. Hopefully I can be that patient.

I can't for the life of me understand 6T (3/4 of a stick!!) butter for a cup of veggies Jimmy. If you see losses slow or gains, it won't be the veggie carbs to blame.

So butter makes you fat now?

Flavia said...

Well, that's a little over 600 calories!! If you're in a calorie defecit and still losing weight then I think it's fine.

I think a problem with some LC-ers is that they will add fat, on top of the amount of calories that leaves them satiated. I remember on the Active Low Carber boards there was a thread on adding coconut oil to your coffee every day. Most people gained weight. It wasn't the fat, for sure...but the calories. I think if they had reduced their calories elsewhere some weight loss could have been achieved.

I'm def a pro fat girl, but I am starting to come around to the theory that calories do count, even on low carb.

Anyway, what you are doing now obviously is working, so keep it up! I always look forward to your weight results.

I think so too Flavia to a degree.

Jimmy, there's nothing in a single book by Atkins, Eades, Taubes, etc. stating one must "fatten up" every morsel that goes in one's mouth.

Indeed in TNAFANY there's a section entitled "savor don't smother" that I would considerately suggest you go and re-read. Calories ultimately matter.

Just a couple of days ago your butter:veggie ratios were 1/8th cup per 1/2 cup or 1:4. So now you're up to almost 1:5 ratio or adding 300 cals to the 30 cals veggies.

Honestly, hubby and I *might* put 1T butter on an entire steam-in-bag of veggies to share between us.

Sounds subjective to me.

Reminds me of this commercial

Butter is a real food.

Flavia said...

LOL, i know! The guy in the commercial just made me laugh. You should have seen the convo in one of the forums: "Confessions of real butter eaters."

We've all done it- at least I have!!! :D

I'm sorry, but I'm having a hard time following the logic of these comments. I understand the facts: 6T=600 to 660 calories for the butter. And, SO? Was this added to 2000+ calories for the day? No. Was this within a reasonable calorie range for a person the size of JM? Yes. Is a low carb WOE ideally low carb, moderate protein, HIGH FAT? YESSSS! So, where was JM supposed to get the rest of the calories that the butter supplied? 500 calories of vegetables? More meat?

Did you notice the sentence right after?

"If you're in a calorie defecit and still losing weight then I think it's fine."

My issue is not with Jimmy but with some people who add extra fat to their normal calorie consumption and are surprised they don't lose. Read the whole comment.

Flavia, you aren't the only one making comments here, so why do you assume that I was targeting your comment? No need to be so touchy.

Flavia said...

Because you quoted me. I am the one that states it was 600 calories. Who's being touchy? Argument by pejorative much?

DHG said...

Sorry, but I didn't quote you. Most people would know that 6 T. of butter is over 600 calories.

Carbsane,

What does it matter whether Jimmy uses 3/4 of stick of butter or more? Obviously, the amount of butter, coconut oil, or other fat has done nothing to impede his weight loss, given the great results he has had so far on his road to 230lbs. Secondly, we know now that the saturated fat from butter is hardly deleterious to your health, so I fail to see the down side.

The extra fat that Jimmy is adding to his meals, may not conform to the guidelines for cooking in fat that you read in the New Atkins book, but if that extra fat keeps him satiated (which I can only assume it does) it is more of positive thing for his diet than a hindrance. Fat general keeps people from gorging on carbs, thus preventing them from getting excess calories as well as provoking a sharp insulin response which will be an impediment to weight loss.

Ultimately, to each his own. There is no reason to be critical of Jimmy's cooking methods as long as he is able to induce weight loss and maintain a healthy lipid profile. What doesn't work for you, may work for somebody else. So, in short, let's not be like the conventional medical and dietary establishment who treats everyone like identical robots.

Lawrence,

I has already read:

This Friday's weigh-in will probably reflect my inability to exercise for most of this week and perhaps a few extra calories in my diet as of late...but I'm not concerned.

From 2/28 menu when I posted this. Jimmy has upped his intake and no way on earth a 1/2 cup of veggies is going to impact anyone's weight much. But he upped butter from 1T that he used to have last year to 2T now 3T. Fat calories count and he's now posted that Friday's weigh in is going to suck. Too many calories ... downside.

If Jimmy doesn't lose weight this week (IF!), it would probably be due to the stress of injury, which slows people down even more than just not exercising. His calories haven't been excessive, butter or no butter. If his weight loss has slowed down, it could also be his body adjusting to the rapid weight loss of previous weeks. Even on TBL, contestants don't consistently lose weight, despite the hours of physical training. Our bodies are not machines.
