To "all the many years of heartache and pain," I say, "Pbbbbt."

Yeah, life can be hard. In some ways, more people, more problems. But more people, more blessings and joy too.

If everything becomes more important and more intense, that's not a bad thing overall.

Totally agree Valerie.

I have two grown children, and now two 10yo grandchildren. They bring great joy to my life. I always liked the comedian's line: "Kids spend the first twelve years of their lives building up the good will they will spend the next twelve years using up"
There is a lot of truth in that, for growing up and separating from parents is hard work. But then new and different joys come when they are grown. I love that my daughter is such a good mother to her girls-- better than I was by far. I enjoy her even more now! Children add an extra measure of meaning to life, both of joy and sorrow. But that's the way it's supposed to be.
I hope all goes well, and that you soon will join the hoardes of complaining parents who wouldn't have it any other way.

Hi Jimmy, I'm a long-time reader of your blog but this is my first comment. I just want to congratulate you and Christine on the pregnancy. My husband and I had our little girl after 16 years of marriage (and many years of heartache) as well. She is turning 2 next month. CONGRATULATIONS! I'm SO happy for you... and get ready for your world to turn upside down and inside out. Parenthood is AMAZING. Blessings to you both!
